How to Build a Potting Bench

A potting bench is one of the most useful additions to any garden workspace. It provides a dedicated area for planting, organizing tools, and preparing soil—keeping the mess contained while making gardening more efficient.

To build a simple potting bench, start with weather-resistant lumber such as cedar or treated pine. Construct a sturdy frame with four legs and a wide work surface that allows plenty of room for pots and soil trays. Adding a lower shelf creates storage space for bags of soil, watering cans, or planters.

Hooks or small shelves along the back of the bench can hold hand tools, keeping everything within reach. Once complete, place your bench in a convenient location near your garden or greenhouse. With a functional potting station in place, everyday garden tasks become easier and far more enjoyable.
